SATURN PEOPLE'S SOUND COLLECTIVE

18 pieces @ the intersections of creative big band music, postmodern rock + outer space.

“Mind Blowing Radness . . .  anything Boyes does from here on out will likely inspire genuine curiosity among a growing segment of the local music-listening public.  The Saturn People’s Sound Collective’s set at the FlynnSpace was simply transcendent, not merely a local highlight, but a Discover Jazz festival topper, period.” - Seven Days

“One of Vermont’s most storied and mythical bands” - Times Argus

After a several year hiatus, The Saturn People’s Sound Collective returns and reboots! The new ensemble leans into the weird-rock angle with orchestrations that uncover expanded opportunities for vocals, electronics and guitar.  The new ensemble boasts an all-star rhythm section featuring two drum kits, a 3-piece vocal section, mallet percussion and 10 horns exploring an alchemy of timbre and long-form composition.  In addition to original music, the Saturn People’s repertoire includes unique interpretations of music by Bjork, Radiohead, Low, Jimi Hendrix and M.I.A.

Sending shockwaves through the Vermont music community, Boyes’ ensemble was a major headliner at the 2013 Discover Jazz Festival, the sole recipient of Goddard College’s 2012 Local Spotlight, and a recipient of a Vermont Community Foundation Arts Endowment grant.

Those familiar with the work of Brian Boyes, know that he is no stranger when it comes to working with large ensembles.  Whether it is as leader of the Bollywood meets Bourbon street Big Bang Bhangra Brass Band, Movement of The People: The Fela Kuti Project or as a member of the legendary 90’s acid-jazz outfit, viperHouse, Boyes’ music consistently demonstrates a unique knack of creating exciting and challenging music that isn’t a challenge to listen to.  Indeed, there is a joyful and honest accessibility to Boyes’ music that carries one from the quietest and darkest corners to raucous outer space sing-alongs.

THE BIG BANG BHANGRA BRASS BAND

Under the direction of noted Vermont musician and band leader, Brian Boyes, the Big Bang Bhangra Brass Band is one HUGE party that combines the rich musical and dance roots of Indian Bhangra, Bollywood, New Orleans Brass Bands, and the 1930′s jungle swing of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.

From call and response singing to ripping horn solos, Big Bang Brass fuses the deep funk and swing grooves of New Orleans with the centuries-old Punjabi Bhangra grooves and dance moves reaching back 500 years.  The result:  a wild and colorful explosion of musical crossroads guaranteed to stir the soul, body, and mind.

Topped off with a troupe of Bhangra dancers, Big Bang Brass features some of Vermont’s best funk and jazz players from such favorites as Movement of the People, The Saturn People’s Sound Collective, ViperHouse, 35th Parallel, Money Jungle, and D’Moja.
